I'm a teacher (third grade) and I promised my class that if they collectively read 100 books before spring break, we could get a pair of class pets.

To my surprise, they actually did it (Judy Moody and Captain Underpants have a lot to answer for, in my opinion), so now I have to ask—rats or guinea pigs? Anyone have experience/thoughts/advice?

That's the conundrum.

But at least it's March, right? Maybe they'll make it to the end of the school year, and then we'll be home free.

You could probably keep them alive that long.

Then I'll do it for the kids. So far I'm leaning toward rats.

I've never tried rats. But I'm invested in their health already.

Not being eaten by a snake is probably a good start for them.

Somewhere a snake is going hungry, though.

Sounds like your class needs a new pet.

That would be incredible. Giving my students the gift of fear.

And they can learn about the food chain! What grade do you teach?

I teach high school English now, so: the monstrous grades.

Oh, so they're already aware of the horrible food chain.

And recreating it in their social lives, yes.

I don't envy you.

I wouldn't envy me either. I think I'm burned out.

How long have you been teaching?

10 years. No, 11. This is 11.

I'm only on my fifth year, so I can only imagine. If you ever want to grad coffee or something and vent, let me know.

I might just do that. Don't want to crush your spirit, though.

I'll just reassure myself it's different in elementary and stress eat for a while.

That was my coping mechanism in my ninth year and it was not pretty.
